Ring around the moon ~ Tonight I stepped out on the deck and there it was...this huge ring up there around the moon. I had read that ice crystals up in the atmosphere are what create these halos. I grabbed my little digital camera and snapped some pictures of it. This is kind of fuzzy but I was happy that I actually captured this beautiful sight! My husband wasn't feeling well tonight but he came out and looked at it too. One of nature's amazing sights! They mentioned the moon halo on the local news tonight too. Here's NASA's lovely photo and explanation: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap000515.html

Hi Lynette, I've never seen a halo around the moon. That's really amazing, especially back up by NASA's explanation. Thank you for sharing.
Wish you have a wonderful 2007!
Thank you fenny and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I took about 6 pictures and the halo only showed up in two of my photos. I had to turn off the flash and lay back in the chair with my head on the back of the seat to get this one without moving the camera too much. Today I had a pain in my neck but it was worth getting the picture LOL. It's not a very common sight here either. I've seen it twice in maybe the last 10 years. I hope you have a wonderful 2007 also!
I cant believe how bright this moon is. That is pretty neat about the ice crystals being responsible.
Thanks Janet. I don't know what those two 'rays' are because they weren't up there when I took the picture, just the moon and the ring around it. I just went out and looked and no ring tonight but the moon is really bright almost looks like a full moon. Think I'll try to add one of the photos that didn't work into this post.
I noticed the moon this evening when we left the theater. Almost full, or maybe it's waning, not sure. I love the photos...it's so hard to take photos at night.\
Happy New YEar!
Thanks Cyn and I hope you have a fun New Years too! I had a 'crick' in my neck for a couple days after taking those pictures LOL. One of these days I'm going to get a tripod!
