Mystery Factory ~ One of the strangest sights we see on our annual drive to Kentucky to see my family is the Ashland Oil Refinery. Right after passing the Kentucky state border from West Virginia is this sprawling huge industrial complex with stack after endless smokestacks and big round oil tanks. It looks huge and mysterious and I can't image what all is going on inside the place. I think it's better to see from afar though, as sadly I read that lots of people living nearby have been experiencing health problems. It is an awesome sight at night, lit up by countless tiny white lights and big flames shooting from the the tops of some of the stacks. Experimenting, I took the photo I had taken of the place last summer, put it in photoshop, and pasted it into the horizon of the sunrise painting (below). I may go ahead and paint this in acrylics because I kind of like the way it looks huge and looming and mysterious on the horizon. Anyways I'm mulling this one over.

I would like to see you turn this 90 degrees and do it in landscape format as opposed to portrait. Ugly as some plants can be, at night, they can be quite intriguing.

I love when we go up to Red Rocks in the summer or are coming home from the mountains on I-70 and see the twinkling lights of Denver and beyond. Even the most hideous places have mystery and magic at nighttime. This is really a great little painting...and congrats on your sale of your tree painting!

I agree with jan. I would love to see it painted. I understand your fascination with it.

happy thanksgiving to you and your family.

Thanks Jan and I haven't painted it in yet. You are so right, it would look better in landscape form. If I do paint it in, I think I'll do it smaller and maybe more surreal looking. I'm still thinking on this one and haven't touched the original painting yet. Hi Cyn and thanks for the congrats, that was great to sell one and I actually sold that painting from my blog and he had originally seen it on artbyus! You're right, night time is magical! J.B., thanks so much and I hope everyone has a Very Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Hello and thank you so very much FennymuN! Please forgive me I just realized I've been calling you Fennymum instead of Fennymun!! I just realized my mistake when seeing your blogger name in the new font in your new blog (it looks great and I loved your flickr photos!)I think my eyes were playing tricks on me to see your name spelled different than it was and I will go fix the misspelling in your link on my blog too! :O I had a nice day yesterday and didn't eat too much turky and fixings like I usually do but it was still very good!

This really commands your attention. Beautiful colors. It's almost mesmerizing... I say paint it.

Hi Nancy and thank you so much for your wonderful comment! It decided me to GO for it! I have all of the background done and I just need to add the tall smokestacks but they won't really look like industrial ones when I get done with them but more surreal looking. Now I am off to visit your blog, I've gotten behind in my blog visiting this week, just not enough free time. :(

Can't wait to see this one completed! I love factories and plants. The first time I drove through a Texas night and saw the refineries all lit up -- wow, I had to pull over every few miles!

Helloo W.J.!! I'm going to try and work on it this weekend some. I've been painting ACEOS but I'm in a mood to do some larger ones now. I bet the refinerys in Texas are huuge! That one in Ashland is really large too, it seems to be acres!
