It's been raining all day but I guess it's the edge of the tropical stormfront moving through. Tonight about a half hour ago I looked outside and the moon was showing through a break in the clouds and it was very orange! I had to check out W.J.'s blog at http://art166.blogspot.com/ to see what phase the moon was in. It is a waning gibbous moon and 85 percent full. I still can't figure out why it looked so orange though! I was even wondering if it was in an eclipse. I got one crummy photo of it and did a digi manip of it. Oh one of these days I hope to get a zoom lens camera so I can get better moon photos! I just saw it again and it's playing 'peekaboo' behind some dark cloud slivers but still orangey looking.

I love these photos! So, is #1 the original, and #2 the manip? I like the grainyness sp? of the photographs. I can imagine the heat and humidity rising through the night. I tried to get some photos of the moon the other night, with not much success.

Hi Cynthia and thanks so much! Yes the top photo is the original. I did put the camera on 'sunset' mode but the moon really was orange. Someone said it was probably moisture and dust in the atmosphere which made it look that way. I can't get good night photos without them being grainy I wish I could though. The moon always looks tiny when I take a photo of it. :(

Thanks Alfreda I wish my photo looked as neat as the moon really looked that night but one of these days I will get a better camera I hope! eek I got a spam mail in my blog and all of a sudden every time I open my yahoo mail I'm getting warnings about the certificate not matching and then pop-ups coming up! Ugh darn spammers! I had to run spyware to get rid of the pop ups. >:(

The moon looks more orange when there is a lot of humidity and pollution in the air... could be from faraway volcanoes or smokestacks who knows? Wasn't there an eruption within the last couple of weeks somewhere ?

Hi Terri, it may have been from the humidity because it had rained all that day from tropical storm Alberto and it was muggy that night with the clouds breaking up.

Hey, Lynette! Love your orange-y moon pics! Where I live, it's too bright to shoot anything in the night sky (darn those city lights!)-- I still try, though!

From one Lunar Freak to another, here's a great link with info about the Orange Moon. It's a huge site, so browse around; you'll learn all kinds of nifty things!

Okay, I lost part of that address. Here it is, again, broken up into three lines. Copy and paste it with NO spaces!

The homepage is called: Keith's Moon Page (in case you end up having to Google/find it).

Oh wow, thanks W.J. I am off to check out Keith's moon page right now! Yep, darn it night should be dark with the sky lit up. I'm glad we live 12 miles out of the city here.

WoW W.J., Keith's Moon Page is definitely going in my favorites what an awesome page dedicated to lunar facts and oh those photos!!!! I had to do a google search to get there if any of you other Lunar Freaks want to check out Keith's page too. I was flabbergasted to see that the circumference of the moon is smaller than the distance from the U.S. east to west coast! :O I always thought the moon was a lot bigger!

I knew you'd enjoy that site, Lynette! I can lose myself there, following links and searching for all things loony (oops, I meant lunar)!
